Physical pain is not a direct cause of narcolepsy. However, as a result of associated symptoms or problems, some narcoleptics may feel pain or discomfort. For instance, people with cataplexy, a frequent narcolepsy symptom marked by abrupt muscle weakness or paralysis brought on by emotions, may fall and suffer pain-causing injuries. Moreover, narcolepsy-related disturbed sleep patterns and excessive daytime sleepiness may be a factor in headaches, pains, or overall exhaustion, all of which can be uncomfortable.
